Greece is introducing a six-day work week, here are the sectors and for what pay

As of July 1, a six-day work week is being introduced in Greece, or more precisely, the challenged provision of the law that was passed last summer is being activated.

This briefly provides that the additional day may not exceed eight hours and no overtime is allowed.

This labor law reform has prompted critics to recall the European Working Time Directive, according to which employees should not work more than 48 hours in a seven-day period, including overtime.

In which industries will six-day work be applied?

Thus, the new six-day period is expected to be implemented from July 1 working regime on industry and branches of the private sector of non-stop work, which apply a five-day weekly work system.

Employers who fall under the provisions of the contested law are obliged to enter the data on the working hours of their employees who will be hired in the declaration on the organization of working hours on the sixth day before the employees start their duties.

How do you pay for six days of work?

Also, according to the provisions of the subject provision, 8 hours per day cannot be exceeded, while overtime hours are prohibited.

As for benefits, employees will receive a 40 percent increase in daily wages on the sixth day of employment. If the sixth day falls on a holiday, then the surcharge is 115 percent.

Who is exempt from six-day work?

It is noted that workers in the hospitality and tourism sector are excluded from the provision, and at the same time it is emphasized that in cases where companies or farms have five-day night shifts (00:00-06:00), their working relationship on the sixth day during the night shift is absolutely not allowed

The amended labor law not only provided for a six-day work week, it has already enabled a working day that lasts a maximum of 13 hours, in order to legalize the combination of permanent and additional work, which many practice.

What about the existing framework for six-day and five-day work

According to the existing legislation, the six-day working relationship applies mainly to sectoral contracts of workers in food and tourism.

The new law was passed a decade later as international creditors asked the country to introduce a six-day work week in order to get out of the economic crisis. In the 2015 referendum, the Greeks convincingly said “no” to the package of measures proposed by the creditors.
