The storm has claimed at least three lives so far, local media reported, warning that the danger would peak during the day.
A tornado was spotted in southeast Nebraska on Friday, where several tornado warnings were issued.
The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado north of Waverly, Nebraska that was moving northeast just after 3 p.m. local time Friday. Officials urged residents in the area to seek shelter immediately.
Tornadoes were also spotted near Bird City, Kansas, Yoder, Wyoming and near Akron, Colorado, according to the National Weather Service.
Other storms are expected to develop on the eastern side, bringing more possible tornadoes and heavy rainfall. There is a risk of worsening weather through Saturday with storms bringing frequent lightning and strong gusts of wind.
