NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg on Friday accused Russia of carrying out espionage activities in Europe, saying it was “unacceptable”.

Speaking to reporters in Berlin, Stoltenberg said all NATO allies must remain vigilant about covert Russian activities, following recent arrests in the UK and Germany.

Last week, Germany arrested individuals accused of espionage and sabotage. And today, in the United Kingdom, five people have been indicted in connection with hostile state activities in favor of Russia Stoltenberg said.

Such actions are dangerous and unacceptable. They will not deter us from supporting Ukraine. And we coordinate closely in our response to any hostile act against a NATO ally – he added.

Last week, German authorities arrested two suspected Russian spies for planning sabotage operations in the country to disrupt arms shipments to Ukraine. The suspects, both German-Russian dual citizens, were allegedly involved in plans to attack military infrastructure and industrial sites, according to federal prosecutors.

British police announced today that five men, including a British citizen, have been charged with “carrying out hostile activities” in the UK to benefit a foreign country, namely Russia.
