UKRAINIAN authorities announced today that they shot down four Iranian-made “kamikaze” drones, which are used by the Russian army in combat operations.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, complained that Tehran was harming Ukrainian citizens, reports Reuters.
The Ukrainian army announced that “Shahid-136”, or as the Russians called them, “Geranj-2” kamikaze drones, were shot down near the port of Odessa.
– Russian forces attacked Odessa from the sea with Iranian drones “Shahid-136”. One civilian was killed, and the administrative building in the port was destroyed – the Operational Command “South” of the Ukrainian army announced today, reports Kyiv Independent.
Kiev, as well as Washington, have accused Iran of supplying drones to Russia, which Tehran has repeatedly denied.
Zelensky asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to prepare a response regarding the use of Iranian equipment, said the spokesman of the Office of the President of Ukraine Serhiy Nikiforov.
– We consider these actions of Iran to be steps against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as against the life and well-being of Ukrainian citizens – he said in a statement.
Military experts say Russia is using Iran’s drones for both reconnaissance and as “stray munitions,” another name for kamikaze drones, which can choose when to strike appropriate targets.
On Friday, a video posted online by an officer of the Ukrainian armed forces showed another Iranian drone, the Mohajer-6, being shot down by Ukrainian forces over the sea.
“Martyrs” were launched from a ramp on a vehicle that can carry several small aircraft. The drone was first seen in footage released during December 2021.
The system is also believed to have been used by the Houthis in Yemen at some point.
The aircraft has the shape of a delta wing, while the nose part contains the warhead and optics needed for a precise attack. The engine is located at the rear of the fuselage and drives a two-bladed propeller.
