PRAGUE – Czechs are having fun on social networks these days with a satirical petition to call a referendum in Kaliningrad with the aim of joining that Russian exclave to the Czech Republic. A humorous online petition, based on an idea first proposed by a Polish user on Twitter, has been signed by 6,500 people, according to Czech media.

“It’s time to divide Kaliningrad so that our Czech brothers finally get access to the sea,” said a user from Poland on Twitter, along with a map showing the northern part of the Kaliningrad region to the Czech Republic.

Kaliningrad was founded in honor of the Czech king Przemyśl Otakar II in the 13th century, and the reason for the petition is the recent referendums on joining Russia in four Ukrainian regions (Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporozhye) and their subsequent annexation from Moscow.

Czechs now compete in putting on humorous mimes and inventing slogans, including “Let’s make Kaliningrad Czech again”, “Kaliningrad is the Czech Republic” and “Kralovec (the Czech name for Kaliningrad) is ours”.

Some also publish stories about how they had a great time on Kaliningrad’s beaches now that they have their own sea and don’t have to go to Croatia anymore. Among other things, the Czechs are publishing the “news” on social networks that a referendum was held in the Russian exclave where more than 100 percent of the residents voted in favor of the Czech Republic annexing that area, reports Beta.
