Two female workers at the Home for the Elderly in Peja were arrested today on suspicion of physical violence against an elderly resident of the home, the Kosovo police announced immediately after a video of this scene of violence was published on social networks.

The news was confirmed by the Kosovo Minister of Internal Affairs with a strong condemnation. Reactions, condemnations are coming. Meanwhile, Gazeta Express reported that four nurses were suspended because of this case.

The footage of the violence that was published today on social networks and in the media allegedly took place in the “Orenda” care center for the elderly in Pec, and the police spokesman for the Pec region, Fadilj Gashi, in a statement to Clan of Kosovo he stated that the attack on the old woman actually happened on October 29, reports KoSSev.info.

The video shows how the old woman tries to defend herself while the worker repeatedly slaps her in the face and kicks her in the stomach.

Gashi also said that three people were arrested in connection with this case.

The Basic Prosecutor’s Office in Peja announced that two prosecutors were involved in this case. One of them, Dorian Yunik, told the media that two people with the initials AP and AR were arrested

– After receiving the first information regarding the event that happened today in Peja, in cooperation with the police, two persons with the initials AP and AR were arrested on suspicion of having committed the criminal offense of assault and participating in the commission of the criminal offense of assault – Juniku said, reports Gazeta Express.

The Kosovo police previously announced that they were arrested around 2 pm, and that further measures are being taken in cooperation with the Prosecutor’s Office.

In the meantime, it was reported that four nurses were suspended from their jobs, including those who were arrested. Only one of them is currently suspected of carrying out the violence, and the other three because they did not report the case to the authorities even though they were on shift with the sister who slapped the unfortunate woman.

This case caused a violent reaction from the public. Officials, associations and individuals advertised with the list.

Such acts of violence are unacceptable wherever they occur, but are particularly serious when they occur in institutions that are supposed to offer help and care – said Svećlja.

The Kosovo Minister of Justice, Aljbuljena Hadžiju, also reacted, stating that she was shocked.

The Mayor of Peć, Gazmend Muhadjeri, stated that this Municipality does not manage any institution that offers services for the elderly.

On the other hand, he called on the health inspection and the police to deal seriously with the case.

The Chamber of Nurses, Midwives and other health workers states in its statement that this kind of behavior does not befit health workers and that this kind of behavior directly affects the image of the health community.

The organization “Women’s Network of Kosovo” asked the Kosovo Ministry of Health, Finance, Labor and Transfer and the Department for Social and Family Policy to revoke the license of the nurses and the license of the “Orenda” center because, as they state, the video shows that bullying happens in this center.

LDK President Ljumir Abdijku also said that he was shocked and that, as he stated, such events reveal the dark side of society.

PDK vice-president Vljora Citaku stated in her post on Twitter that she did not have the strength to watch the video to the end and added that the persons who harassed the old woman should be deprived of their work licenses and prosecuted.
