Police in India have blamed rats for destroying nearly 200 kilograms of cannabis that they had earlier seized from dealers and stored in the premises of a police station.

“Rats are small animals and they are not afraid of the police.” It is difficult to protect drugs from them”, stated the court in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

The court asked the police to show the seized drugs as evidence, and Judge Sanjay Chaudhary cited as many as three cases in which rodents destroyed seized marijuana.

It was about supplies that were intended in court as evidence in drug trafficking cases.

In one of the orders, when the court asked the police to show the seized drugs, it was stated that 195 kilograms of cannabis were eaten by rats.

In another case, involving 386 kilograms of drugs, the police filed a report stating that “rats” had “eaten some” of the cannabis.

Justice Chaudhary said that around 700 kilograms of marijuana seized by the police was stored in warehouses of police stations in Mathura district and that all the drugs were “at risk of rats”.

He pointed out that the police are not experts in solving this specific problem and advised that the confiscated drugs from “fearless rodents” should be protected in the future so that, instead of being kept in police warehouses, they are sold to research laboratories and medical companies, with the proceeds going to state budget.

Indian media recall that in 2018, eight Argentine police officers were fired after they blamed mice for the disappearance of half a ton of cannabis from the police warehouse. However, experts disputed their claim, saying that animals “can hardly substitute drugs for food” and that in that case there would be a lot of dead rodents in the warehouses.

A 2019 study showed that laboratory mice, after consuming a cannabis test, “became less active and their body temperature decreased.”

In 2017, police in the eastern state of Bihar blamed rats for consuming thousands of liters of seized alcohol, a year after the state banned the sale and consumption of alcohol.
