A crocodile grabbed and ate a one-year-old boy and seriously injured his father while they were rowing on a river in Malaysia.
The little boy was snatched from his canoe yesterday morning by the beast while he was fishing with his father in Sabah on Thursday morning. His distraught father (40) tried to defend him, but the crocodile easily overpowered him. He ran ashore with multiple bite wounds including a gruesome gash on his head.
The villagers pulled the member of the Palauh tribe out of the river, however, the crocodile had already dragged his son into the depths. It later surfaced with the toddler’s mutilated body in its jaws before sinking back into the water.
Sumso Rashid, the leader of the rescue team, says that the search for the body is still ongoing.
– The father suffered serious head and body injuries. His son is still missing, and the search is ongoing. The man was transferred to Lahad Datu Hospital for treatment – Rashid said.
The Royal Malaysian Police and Maritime Police joined the local fire service in the search for the boy’s body. Officials also warned villagers living along the river to stay away from the water due to the risk of another crocodile attack.
– Many residents rely on the river for food and livelihood, so they have to enter the water. We warned them of additional dangers at this time and to be extra careful because the crocodile will probably still be in the area – Rashid added.
